Hiring a Trustworthy Landscape Contractor

Due diligence in selecting a landscaper is critical, and the consequences of hiring someone who is unlicensed, or un insured can be catastrophic.

According to the California State License board, your checklist for Hiring a Landscape Contractor are as follows:
  • Only hire state-licensed landscaping contractors and verify the license status at www.CheckTheLicenseFirst.com or by calling 800.321.CSLB (2752).
  • Verify on the CSLB website that the contractor has worker’s compensation insurance, if they are claiming exemption, they shouldn’t have any employees.
  • Get at least three bids. Don’t assume the lowest bid is the best; it might not include everything that you asked for or the quality of materials you would like.
  • Check references
  • Ask the contractor to provide you with copies of their certificates of insurance for liability and for workers’ compensation before the work begins.
When it comes to hiring a landscaper, at first it seems like a difficult decision, but we are confident that after taking a little time to learn more about us you come to the conclusion that we are worth taking a closer look at.  After all, the list gets small pretty quick if you are a homeowner that is concerned about liability protection and is looking for a landscaper.  Many landscapers are unlicensed, which means they probably don’t carry worker’s compensation insurance, which means that if an accident occurred on their clients property, the client would be responsible for picking up the cost.  Of the licensed contractors, many don’t pay worker’s compensation insurance, by fraudulently claiming exemption and pretending that that they don’t have employees.  Of the licensed contractors out there that are legitimate, many don’t service the residential sector, and the remaining ones that do, most don’t offer a full service including maintenance, and are off to the next job once they pick up their final payment for the installation.

We as consumers invest time choosing the right car or to buy or the best refrigerator, but we sometimes don’t invest the time into to finding the right landscaper and the consequences can be dire.  So please, even if we are ultimately not selected make sure to do your due diligence, before you hire someone to work on your property.
