I was at a leadership conference last week put on by a trade association that my company belongs to called California Landscape Contractor’s Asociation. The three nuggets that I took away from the speaker’s presentation are:
#1 Work hard (and smart) and perform – In the case of performance, the use of metrics is essential in measuring performance. For employee performance evaluation, we are identifying what areas need improvement and setting goals for achieving them that can be measured. For example, I often have difficulty getting a hold of a crew leader on the radio. So I set a goal for him during his recent evaluation, in which 90 percent of the time I try to get a hold of him by radio, I get a hold of him within 15 minutes.
#2 Radiate confidence and Optimism -A great leader in spite of the challenges and problems he/she faces, radiates optimism and confidence, and his/her team follows the example and in turn this carries throughout the culture of the organization.
#3 Enlist and Enroll vs. Command and Control – It is much more effective to effect change by means of positive reinforcement instead of punishment. The speaker gave an interactive example, which really demonstrated his point well, and reminded me how important it is for me to demonstate more often my appreciation for all the fabulous things our team does each and everyday.
I hope these nuggets are helpful to you in your daily life whether it by in your family, profession, or in your community.
